BT Sport pundit and double Champions League winner Steve McManaman believes the Premier League sides will be the ones to fear in Europe’s top competition this year.
Speaking to attendees at our first Google Digital Garage event at Anfield, he told guests that he fancied Liverpool to make it through a tricky looking group that features PSG , Napoli and Red Star Belgrade.
He said: “They have a difficult draw in the first round of the Champions League but I think they are going to be OK.
“When you speak to other teams around Europe, Liverpool and Man City are the teams they fear. English sides are very strong in Europe this year. The last five or six years it has been the Spanish teams but it could be the English teams now.”
The attacker, who also played for Man City and Real Madrid in a stellar career, said that the introduction of staggered kick-off times this season is good news for the trade.
He said: “I think it’s great because with all the Champions League games being played at the same time you were spoiled for choice. With a game at 6pm and another at 8 is brilliant.
“I’m an avid football fan so for people like me it’s great and for pubs and bars you can get them in early so hopefully it should be a big, big success.”
“The atmosphere in bars can be exceptional. We have seen that with Champions League games and with the World Cup, particularly when you get a collection of people cheering for the one team or nation.”
The Anfield event was the first in a series being held across the country as part of our new link-up with Google.
Licensees and their teams are invited to attend for FREE so they can learn more about how to maximise digital opportunities for their business.
The sessions include workshops and presentations on a range of subjects including social media, email marketing and website designs.
