Opening at all hours to ensure customers never miss a minute of the match
Vicky Martin of the Sup & Chow in Cheltenham is the BT Sport Manager of the Month for November
Our latest #BTMOTM has won the award for opening at ‘silly o’clock’ so her customers never have to miss a moment of the action at the start or the end of the day.
So it made perfect sense that Vicky Martin received the award from a man who knows a thing or two about finishing.
BT Sport pundit and former England, Liverpool, Real Madrid and Manchester United striker Michael Owen visited The Sup & Chow in Cheltenham to present the much-deserved award.
Vicky, who has been landlady at the Wadworth pub for 16 months, said: “It has been hard work getting the pub going and the reward comes in the recognition of that from our brilliant customers.
“But I have had a big smile on my face winning this. I am quite a down to earth person and I don’t like a huge fuss but it has been great for everyone at the pub to get this recognition and it’s been a wonderful day for our customers.”
In her time at the Sup & Chow, Vicky has transformed it from a wet-led pub into a rounded, more female-friendly venue that provides a range of top class sport, live music and quiz nights. She has also focussed on introducing a quality menu at all times of day.
Breakfast servings have certainly been on the up since The Ashes started.
“From an English point of view The Ashes have been disappointing but it hasn’t been disappointing for me,” she explains. “We have standard opening hours of 8am to 1.30am anyway so we have been open for breakfast and late at night.
“We have customers who want to catch sport before work and others who have finished a later shift. With applications to the local authority I have been able to extend those hours to as late as 4.30am, which has not been a problem because we have a good reputation.”
As well as showing sports such as cricket and boxing at less traditional hours Vicky has built a big following for rugby union.
“Rugby is very important for us, as you would imagine in this part of the country, so we show all the live Aviva Premiership games on BT Sport. We are also growing our football trade now. We discuss with customers what they want to see and also use our Facebook page to discuss it.”
One footballer who was impressed with her offering was Michael Owen.
He said: “Congratulations to Vicky. It’s been great to meet her and so many people at the pub. This is a bit different to the manager of the month awards I am more used to but it’s a great idea by BT Sport to show what licensees around the country are doing.
“I always say if you can’t be at the game the pub is the next best place to watch it.”
It has been a hectic few months for Vicky. As well as winning #BTMOTM for November she was also nominated for a Great British Pub Award.
On top of showing live sport at the pub she has raised cash for Prostate Cancer UK and sponsors football, rugby and cricket teams – showing just how dedicated she is to sport at all levels.
As well as winning the trophy and a visit from Michael Owen, Vicky will also receive a 4K TV for the Sup & Chow.
Judges have been impressed with the standard of entries from all over the country and are now looking for the next monthly winner.
